Given the integrated learning approach (mind, heart and hands touched) promoted by the university, the Chaplaincy office at CI-UCBC stands for spiritual formation.
In order to contribute in the fulfilment of the vision of CI-UCBC (Being transformed to transform) the chaplaincy office carries out a range of activities that aim to create opportunities for transformation and cultivate a redemptive community that stimulates and sustains the spiritual growth of both UCBC staff and students. The following are the major activities that the chaplaincy office organizes on Campus for both staff and students.
Chapel service
Chapel service is the main chaplaincy activity that gathers the whole community for twice per week. The following are among goals of chapel time at UCBC:
- Worship the Lord Jesus Christ
- Fellowship with one another as the body of Christ
- Create a transformational and inclusive space through dynamic chapel services
- Offer opportunity for non-Christians to encounter Christ through the gospel
- Equip or empower members for their calling as agents of the Kingdom for change and transformation through systematic Biblical teachings which are both theological, contextual and practical.
The service is built on an annual theme which is explored through specific topics every Monday and Friday from 12:00-1pm. Speakers come from our CI-UCBC community as well as partner churches in Beni town.
Ebenezer Worship Team is a key player during chapel service. This worship group made of staff and students, leads the community in praise and worship. For an effective spiritual and artistic preparation, the team meets for practice thrice a week: Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1-2pm. A monthly retreat is held at the end of every month as an opportunity of spiritual formation of singers.
Discipleship programs
Every Wednesday, students meet around a facilitator for discipleship program. This is a program built on basic Biblical teaching for new believers. The program aims to strengthen new believer’s faith through Biblical trues. But, also, it serves as a space that stimulates spiritual growth of participants.
Counseling
Through formal and informal counseling session, we create a safe and healthy environment where those in need can talk freely, be carefully listened and appropriately accompanied. Chaplains are devoted to provide psychological and spiritual support to staff and students who seek help for their issues.
Mentoring
This is done in formal as well as informal way. It happens mostly during Reflection day activities when students find a room to share and discuss with staff about specific questions they are struggling with and get orientation.
Reflection day
This activity happens every last Wednesday of the month. It is a time of reflection, connection and resolution. A space where the community gathers to reflect about some real and practical issues in the society referring to different teaching received in chapel throughout a period of time and discuss actions to be taken at a personal as well as collective level for a real change to happen. These three questions would summarize what happens during Reflection day: what is going on? What did we learn? And what can we do (at a personal as well as cooperative level) in order to respond to the challenges.
Prayer and fasting program
Every first Monday of the month, the whole community spends a whole day praying and fasting to seek God’s face for the sake of the Country, CI-UCBC Organization and individual requests. A special chapel program is organized that day from 12:00-1:30pm.
Weekly prayer session for CI staff only
Every Monday, from 8:00-9:00am, all CI-UCBC staff working on Campus gather together to commit the whole week in God’s hand and still pray for the Country, the work of CI-UCBC and individual requests. An exhortation message is shared to encourage staff to strive for new things in their work.
Weekly intercession session for both staff and students
A small group of students and staff meet every Tuesday from 7:00-8:00 to pray for different prayer requests and support UCBC community in prayer.
Other specific spiritual activities
Through Christian groups operating on Campus including Campus pour Christ; GBU (Groupe Biblique Universitaire); UYDC (University Youth Devoted for Christ); Generation Néhémie; Les Jeunes Ambasadeurs pour Christ.
